No miracle cure for A(H1N1) virus, DOH reminds public
>> May 22, 2009
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) National Epidemiology Center on Tuesday warned the public against reports that there are alternative medicine to the deadly A(H1N1) strain.
Radio dzBB's Teresa Taveres quoted NEC chief Dr. Eric Tayag as advising the public not to believe such information because there is no "miracle cure" for the virus that has recorded 80 deaths over 50 countries.
The NEC chief made the remark following reports that the virgin coconut oil could help combat the A(H1N1) strain as it strengthens a person's immunity system.
Tayag said that while some people would take advantage of the situation, it is best to know that there are no other solutions to the problem aside from the precautionary measures advised by the government.
Tayag explained that there has been no available vaccine as of yet specific for this virus. Meanwhile, the anti-viral drug, oseltamivir, which the government said was effective against the virus, should be given to the patient immediately on the second day of his fever.
As part of the precautionary measures, the DOH also recommended the following:
• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
• Wash hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• If sick, self-monitor and stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
• Consult your doctor immediately should signs and symptoms of flu persist.
